What makes people powerful

Put-together people are well-rounded in the sense that they keep up with enough news that they know what's going on, but do not get so knee-deep in it that they're stressed, overwhelmed, or otherwise distracted from their own responsibilities. They read different books, magazines and news sources, and keep up with a general knowledge of trends, issues and events. Whereas having super specific, elitist tastes tend to come off as pretentious and turn people off, having a down-to-Earth, unique style makes someone super endearing, and relatable.

Put-together people have a lot of clarity about who they are and what they enjoy, and that comes across in how they spend their time. Whether it's for business or pleasure, put-together people are able to travel alone, dine alone, and do it all gracefully. They know how to enjoy and savor their lives, and are not reliant on someone else's presence to make something worthwhile.

They are independent, self-sustaining, and capable of being content by themselves. Along with not being aggressive, highly powerful, put-together people do not express envy, jealousy or resentment toward anyone else. They applaud other people's accomplishments, empathize with their struggles, and understand that how they respond to someone else's life says almost nothing about that person, and almost everything about themselves.

Put-together people are confident in their ability to pay bills, cook dinner, or navigate travel on their own. They do not need to be skilled masters at any one field in particular, but when it comes to the basics of day-to-day life, powerful people don't seem baffled by simple things. There's something to be said for transparency, but there's more to be said for keeping your private life just that: private.

You will seldom come across a powerful or put-together person who overshares the minutiae of their lives, especially among anyone other than very close friends. They understand that less is more, and that it is a strength to not have every person they know aware of every detail of their personal lives. They don't talk about themselves ad nauseam.

Every day we have so many tasks that we want to get done. But sometimes we fall short and only complete some of our daily quota. Thing is, failing should should not be considered normal to us. Even so, we can avoid this problem all together by simply not wasting our time in the first place. Say no more often, and get some work done! Powerful people who achieve great things motivate and inspire us. They push the boundaries on what we think is impossible. The greater action and goal orientation of power holders that helps them influence others, get things done and be successful can also have a number of potentially negative consequences for society on the whole. These can be seen in the ways power holders often perceive and treat other individuals. Power holders can focus their attention too narrowly on their goals and pay poor attention to social situations.

They can therefore have difficulty in taking the perspective of other people — often relying on stereotypes and objectifying others. These detrimental traits can be mitigated through social responsibility training and a good organisational culture.

Organisations that focus only on profit and maximising targets can prompt executives to neglect other things that matter, such as people. In contrast, organisations that emphasise the role of people can foster socially responsible management practices. In the long term, these can lead to a more prosperous environments and perhaps even an increase in profits. Edition: Available editions United Kingdom. Become an author Sign up as a reader Sign in.
