He showed us the signal for warning our dive buddies that we were getting loopy in the head. Feeling a bit jittery in the water, my dive master was kind enough to hold my hand on the descent. He raised his BCD hose in the air, asking if I was ready. Down, down, down we went. So far, so good.
No issues with my ears, which gave me a great sense of relief. The only other battle was a mental one. And trying not to think about the eerie feeling in the pit of your stomach. Once at maximum depth, I will never forget what I saw and experienced.
Giant 30 and 40 foot stalagmites that reached up forming a tunnel attached to the outer wall of the Blue Hole. Swimming through the tunnel, with other divers up ahead, clearly visible, but darkened by shadow. Looking off to the right and seeing nothing but the chasm of water below, and…if you looked closely, the figures of seven or eight reef sharks circling the void expanse. After what seemed like only a brief moment, my dive master gave the thumbs up to signal that it was time to start ascending the wall.

Apparently, years ago, Cousteau went scuba diving in Lake Tahoe. He emerged from the water shaken, but not with cold. What did Cousteau see? Maybe the bodies of unlucky gamblers who crossed the Mafia in s Reno. Or maybe it was Tahoe Tessie, the Loch Ness likeness of the lake. The Cousteau story may be a myth, but it is no less chilling, because the physical conditions of the lake are such that bodies could still be drifting beneath the surface.
At feet depending on the level of water in the basin , Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake in the US. Crater Lake in Oregon is the deepest in the country. Lake Tahoe is located between two fault zones, and it formed through a tectonic combo of uplift and subsidence. The Sierra Nevada mountains rose up on the west and the Carson Range rose up on the east. After a series of battles over ownership and restauration costs, she ended up neglected and in disrepair, until in January a good Samaritan was found to finance her restauration.
It is the aim of this project to make the Calypso seaworthy again, although this grand old dame will probably no longer be used for expeditions, but function as ambassador for the protection of the environment and underwater world. Restauration is scheduled to be complete by the end of Cousteau is said to be the father of the Aqualung, and while it was his idea to create an underwater breathing apparatus, it was actually developed by Emile Gagan and Georges Commeinhes.
Cousteau himself however was not short of ideas and with his team developed a wide range of other products that would revolutionize the way we dive today. Amongst them was the very first underwater scooter for divers. She is still in existence today and thus the oldest scientific submersible. She has done more than dives to date. But the list does not end here! He also invented the lighting systems and underwater cameras and housing for his films. Cousteau died on the 25th June from a heart attack.
He was 87 years old. What are your thoughts about Jacques Cousteau? Did he inspire you too? Let us know in the comments below.
